be still

God brought me to Psalm 46 tonight...

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear through the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, through its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling...The nations rage, the kingdoms totter...Be still, and know that I am God..."

Sounds a lot like our moment. A week ago, a hurricane roared through Texas. Another is headed to Florida. North Korea is testing bombs, now nuclear, and seemingly almost weekly. Every day's news brings in something new, and destabilizing, and uncertain -- Brexit, Charlottesville, Russian hacking, a potentially devastating tweet.

I am comforted that thousands of years ago, someone else felt the same way. Felt as though the nations were torn, as though the very earth was splitting apart. I am comforted that someone else found solace in the Lord, that he could face such a terrifying future and still preach an antidote.

Know God. Recognize God. Acknowledge His sovereignty.

Be still.
